Let your kids take a swing at fun. It’s good for them!
Taking time away from academics and scheduled events is important for children. Although structure is good for kids, it’s also essential for a child’s development to have free time. Here are three reasons why free time on playground equipment is important for a child’s growth: Playtime teaches a child how to interact with others, it encourages them to use their imagination - enhancing their problem solving skills, and physical exercise is a healthy way for children to relieve stress.
Children learn how to interact with others on the playground. By playing with other kids on swingsets and jungle gyms, they learn simple fundamentals such as sharing, taking turns and what social behavior is acceptable. Kids also learn about different people during playtime. A playground can be a classroom for human nature. They grow to accept that people behave differently in certain situations, how to deal with varying circumstances accordingly as well as how to respect other’s differences. Kids also learn their own special abilities romping around on playground equipment and swingsets. They discover what they are good at and what they like to do. Free playtime also shows kids how to respect other’s strengths and weaknesses.
Unstructured time also allows children to use their imaginations, which is critical for developing strong problem solving skills. Transforming a zip line into a journey across a raging river and a simple swingset into a circus trapeze engages a child’s imagination. A healthy imagination will make for a child who is able to think independently, outside of the box and use all of their faculties to approach life with a sense of adventure. The conversion of simple playground activities into something entirely different will enhance problem-solving skill which will benefit them throughout their lives as well as provide a strong sense of independence.
In addition, a playground is a wonderful place for children to release stress. Taking time away from academics and chores is a healthy way for kids to let go of built-up tension and excess energy. Swinging, jumping, climbing and running are good for children both physically and emotionally. Taking time away from structured activity is an important part of keeping a child well-rounded and healthy. It allows kids a recess for the soul and a chance to reset themselves and really get back into the swing of things.
A playground is not just a playground. It’s a place for kids dream, relax and learn to work with others. So whether your kids are playing on the playground swings at recess, or having friends over to swing on their own swingsets, it’s more than playtime, it’s a time to grow.
