Five Steps to Telling Kids Play Time on Swing Sets is Over

Anyone who runs a daycare or works at a school knows kids love heading out to the playground more than just about anything. The problem is once your kids get out there, it can be hard to get them back inside! When you try to call them in, with a few on the swing set, a few others at the far end of the yard playing ball, and another on the slide, how do you round everybody up without wasting a lot of time or shouting? The key is being consistent and having a routine every day that lets the kids know you’re serious about the playground schedule.

Our five steps will get the children in your care to respond quickly every time you tell them play time is over and it’s time to get off the swing sets and slides until the next play time:

1. Tell the kids before they go outside what you will expect at the end of playtime. Remind them how long they will have to play and when you will be calling them to come in. Let them know you will call them in only once without there being consequences for not listening. Let them know what the consequences will be for not listening – for instance, having to stay in the classroom for a portion of the next playtime.

2. Give kids a “3 minute warning” before calling them in. This gives them the opportunity to take one more trip down the slide, finish a turn on the swing set, or tag someone “it” in their game of tag.

3. Use a firm voice and be specific when you call them in. Being brief, clear, and specific is best. Say something like “Kids, play time is over. Everyone line up single-file now at the door please.”

4. If a student doesn’t listen the first time or tries to bargain, take him firmly by the hand and walk him back to the line or into the classroom. Remind him you were very clear on what you expected and gave him plenty of time to respond.

5. Follow through on any consequences you mentioned earlier. One of the most effective consequences for children of grade school age is to take away a portion of the next playtime. Have them stay in the classroom for the first several minutes of the next playtime and stress to them that since they were disrespectful last time around, they are now paying for it by losing the time they most enjoy.

If you are consistent with this approach, you’ll soon have your children coming in from playtime without any whining.
