Cold Weather is Coming: How to ensure your child's safety on playground equipment and still enjoy outdoor play through the winter and fall.

Unlike swimming pools, some playgrounds can be used throughout the year. While children still need time to explore the outdoors, it's important to be aware that winter weather means special conditions exist on the playground.

One of the biggest concerns is safe surfacing. As the temperature drops, some playground surfaces tend to lose their resiliency. Surfacing under and around playground equipment that has snow on top of it has not been tested for impact absorption. Surfacing is important because it protects children from injury after a fall. Since 70 percent of injuries on a playground occur from a fall to the surface, without a resilient material more injuries are likely.

Winter weather affects all types of playground surfacing. In freezing temperatures, surfacing material may harden and lose its ability to cushion falls. Another concern with winter weather is the build-up of snow and ice, creating a hard, slippery surface. Freezing temperatures and snow build-up reduce the ability of surfacing to absorb the impact of children's falls.

Consider using synthetic materials for ground surfacing. Although the initial cost is more, materials such as rubber tiles are slower to decompose and are much more resilient to rain, snow and other elements that may shorten the life of the playground equipment.

Playkids recommends that the playground equipment is off limits if the equipment is wet. Wet conditions can exist because of fog, rain, ice and snow. Such conditions make the playground equipment slippery, thus resulting in more falls. Children should be allowed to play on the equipment once the snow is removed and when playground equipment is dry.

Compare swing set materials. Today's swing sets are made of a variety of materials, including wood, metal and plastic. Each material has advantages and disadvantages, so decide what features are most important to you. If you want something natural looking, a wood swing set might be for you. Give wood swing sets a coat of sealer before it gets cold to extend the life of the wood. Swing sets with molded plastic seats and accessories are often the most weather resistant. Finally, metal swing sets are usually the least expensive, but due to rust, tend not to last as long as wood or plastic. Always check the equipment regularly for signs of wear and tear.
Playing on swing sets and playgrounds can be fun for kids in the winter. With a few precautions and the right materials, playgrounds can be a safe way for kids to get outside all winter long.
